The bench is the only surface you cannot hide

Laminate is the value installed option with the widest décor range and the weakest heat story at the joins. Engineered stone (quartz composite) is the familiar mid-to-high Australian look with consistent colour; you still use trivets and follow the brand’s UV and heat rules. Sintered porcelain or ceramic slabs are the current heat-and-UV conversation, fabricated by specialists. Natural stone is unique and, in marble, more fragile around acid and etching. There is no universal winner — there is a best match to cooking style and budget band.

A waterfall (the bench dropping down the end of an island or run) is worth it when that end is a primary elevation — open-plan, seen from the sofa — and when the material can take a clean mitre or join. It uses more slab, more fabrication time, and shows every alignment error. On a galley against a wall, it is usually money better spent on a better substrate or a fuller splashback.

Yes. From 1 July 2024 Australia banned manufacture, supply, processing and installation of engineered stone with 1% or more crystalline silica. Existing installed benches can stay. New work in that category is not a lawful path — confirm current WHS guidance with the fabricator.
